Chapter 9: A Secret Beneath Her Heart

1151 Words
Julia spent the past two days exactly like the ones before them—surviving rather than living. Every morning, she forced herself out of bed despite the lingering pain that never truly left her body. She buried her heartbreak behind a practiced smile, completed every task expected of her, and lowered her head whenever someone spoke to her. Every night, she endured the betrayal pain as Jason returned to Willow's bed, her body bleeding while her wolf cried itself into exhaustion. Humiliation had become as familiar as breathing. Pain had become her constant companion. She no longer remembered what it felt like to wake without dread or to fall asleep without praying that the next day would somehow hurt less than the last. Now, standing once again outside the healer's office, the room felt different. Smaller. The walls seemed to close in around her, pressing against her chest until it became difficult to breathe. Just a few days ago, she had walked through those same doors searching for answers about her failing body. Today, she already knew the truth. She was carrying a pup. And every choice before her led toward death—hers, her wolf's, or her unborn child's. For the first time in her life, the healer's office no longer felt like a place of healing. It felt like the place where her impossible future had begun. Heavier. Julia sat on the edge of the wooden examination bed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Mira had stepped outside at the healer’s request, leaving the room wrapped in thick silence. The healer studied her carefully. There was more here. More than exhaustion. More than simple illness. Julia inhaled slowly. “My mate chose another,” she finally said. The words were quiet. But they shattered the silence like glass. The healer’s eyes widened. “Your mate… chose another?” she repeated, disbelief threading through her voice. Julia nodded once. “Yes.” Understanding dawned slowly across the healer’s face. “Is that the reason for the scars on your abdomen and chest?” she asked gently. “Betrayal pain?” Julia’s throat tightened. “Yes.” She did not elaborate. She did not need to. Any experienced healer understood the effects of betrayal between mated wolves—especially when the bond was still active. The healer sighed softly. “I suspected as much. Your wounds are not ordinary self-inflicted injuries. They are fueled by bond trauma.” Julia lowered her gaze to her hands. “Tell me something,” she said quietly. “If I reject my mate… will it affect my pup?” The healer stiffened slightly at the question. “It will,” she answered honestly. Julia closed her eyes briefly. “How?” “Your body is already weakened,” the healer explained. “Your wolf is strained from ongoing trauma. If you initiate a rejection while pregnant, the shock alone could trigger a miscarriage.” Julia’s breath caught. “And if the pup survives?” she whispered. The healer hesitated only a second before answering. “Then the pregnancy will demand far more from you than your body can safely provide. A growing pup draws life energy from both parents. Without the mate’s stabilizing presence, your wolf will be forced to compensate.” She met Julia’s gaze. “And right now, your wolf is so weak. You would be at risk of dying.” The room went silent again. “So whatever I do…” Julia said slowly, “my pup and I are at risk?” “Yes,” the healer replied gently. “That is why pregnancies among wolves are meant to be supported by both mates. The male wolf provides grounding energy simply by being near. His scent, his presence, his strength—it stabilizes the mother and the pup.” Julia’s fingers curled over her stomach protectively. “And if my mate is bonding with another?” she asked, voice almost inaudible. The healer’s expression darkened. “Then your trauma increases. Your body perceives abandonment. That stress compounds the risk.” Julia absorbed the words like a quiet sentence being handed down. There was no safe path. Stay bonded—risk slow destruction. Reject—risk immediate shock. Tell him—risk losing control of her own fate. “Who is your mate?” the healer asked after a moment. “Perhaps we can approach the alpha. If your mate is ordered to remain by your side until you give birth, it would greatly improve your survival chances.” Julia’s heart stuttered painfully at that suggestion. The alpha. If the healer knew— If anyone knew— Everything would unravel. “Healer,” Julia said carefully, lifting her eyes. “Can this remain between us?” The healer straightened. “I do not share patient information without consent. Not even to the alpha.” Julia searched her face. “Even if the alpha demands it?” The healer’s expression hardened slightly with professional pride. “Even then. The alpha does not have the authority to override healer confidentiality. It is protected by ancient pack law. He cannot use alpha power to force us to divulge a patient’s condition.” For the first time since hearing about the pup, something like relief flickered in Julia’s chest. She nodded slowly. “Thank you.” The healer’s voice softened again. “Julia… this is not something you can endure alone.” Julia almost smiled at that. I have been enduring alone for a long time, she thought. “I will think about what you said,” she murmured. “I will try to speak to my mate.” Her hand rested over her abdomen again. “But I want to be the one to tell him. He has his chosen. I deserve at least that much.” The healer studied her for a long moment. There was pain in this young omega. But there was also resolve. “Of course,” the healer said finally. “No one will know. Your condition and your situation will remain confidential.” Julia nodded. A fragile silence settled between them. Inside her, something had shifted. For weeks she had felt like she was dying slowly—bleeding out through invisible wounds no one could see. Now there was something else inside her. A heartbeat. Small. Innocent. Unaware of alliances and hierarchy. Unaware of betrayal. Her pup. Jason’s pup. The realization was both terrifying and grounding. She was no longer fighting only for herself. When she finally stood to leave, her legs felt steadier than they had in days. Not because the pain was gone. It wasn’t. But because now she had something more powerful than despair. She had a secret. And for the first time since the announcement in the pack hall— Julia did not feel like she was fading. She felt like she was preparing.
