More silence.
I feel the tension in the air, but act unaware, and keep going.
"So I'm asking you—all of you—to welcome her into this community. Into our circle. Into the Hale family. Because she's already in my heart. And that's not going to change."
I step down from the podium. Walk straight to our table. Extend my hand to Sabrina.
She stares at it like it's a snake.
"Dance with me," I say.
"Ethan—"
"Please."
She takes my hand because refusing me in front of five hundred people would be worse than accepting. And I'd been counting on that.
I lead her to the dance floor. Pull her into my arms. The band, reading the room perfectly, starts playing something slow and romantic.
