The house was silent in an annoying way when l got home. I walked through the front door, the click of my heels echoing on the polished wood. I felt different than I had when I left this morning. The time spent with James and my father had acted like a mirror to my own life, seeing their broken attempts at being a family made me realize that I didn't want to be the one holding the hammer over mine even though I decided I wouldn't forgive immediately. Luca was out on the balcony, leaning over the railing as if he could find the answers to our problems in the headlights of the cars far below.
