“You said the same thing about yourself, didn’t you? You couldn’t get Gerald’s mark, so you used me to try to get what you wanted.”
My eyes burned. “You destroyed your life, and now you’re trying to destroy mine.”
Simone’s voice broke. “I didn’t want you to end up like me.”
“I won’t.” I wiped my eyes. “I will never become you.”
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I simply sat there.
Simone was wrong about many things.
But she wasn’t wrong about one thing.
The mark had changed me.
Before the mark, I wanted Rhett to choose me.
I wanted him to love me because he wanted to.
Now the thought of losing the mark felt unbearable.
