The surgery lasted nearly five hours before it was finally over.
The moment they wheeled Ellen out, I saw the expression on the nurse’s face and knew it had gone well.
Relief hit me so hard my nose stung, and my eyes immediately filled with tears.
Beside me, Miles Carter actually started clapping, congratulating me and thanking the doctor as if he were one of the family.
Simone came over too.
The moment she saw Ellen, tears streamed down her face.
Ellen was still coming out of the anesthesia.
She wasn’t fully conscious yet, only murmuring incoherently; her unfocused eyes turned toward Simone.
I couldn’t tell whether she actually saw her.
They took Ellen into the monitoring unit, and everyone was stopped outside.
I forced myself to calm down.
I thanked the doctor
