The next morning, Rhett and I finished breakfast and were getting ready to leave when he suddenly asked,
“Ellen has her follow-up appointment today, right?”
“Yeah. Did your assistant tell you?”
I couldn’t hide the little lift in my mood.
Every time Rhett remembered something about Ellen, every time he asked about her without me having to bring her up first, it felt like another small step between us.
“Mm-hmm. Her numbers are back to normal now, right?”
I gave a smile.
“They are. She’s recovering really well. Her appetite is great, too. She’s put on almost ten pounds lately.”
“Good.”
Rhett gave a nod, evidently pleased.
