What Pip remembered was outstanding and filled in most of the blanks. Dad's going to be busy today, warning the two bike clubs that their names have been dropped and to be on guard. It's not the first time the clubs have been threatened, but this was serious, and the man they killed was one of their own. I think the guy said he was from the group we had been investigating, and I had no reason to doubt him. Death was the better choice for him when he was caught, because it would have made his life unbelievably difficult: beaten every day, no food or water — until he wasted away, so it was good to have received a bullet — not the best outcome we would have hoped for, but better than the alternatives.
