Chapter Four: Eyes That See Too Much
Kate’s POV
The pack started watching me.I noticed it first in the way conversations stopped when I passed.
In the way wolves who once barely acknowledged my presence now nod their heads slightly, like they weren’t sure whether to show respect or fear. It unsettled me.
I had spent years being invisible. Becoming noticeable overnight felt wrong like wearing a crown that didn’t belong to me.
My wolf moves uneasily beneath my skin.
They feel it, she whispered.
They don’t know what it is but they feel it.
I pulled my cloak tighter around my shoulders as I crossed the inner pack house .
The morning sun was pale, weak, but my senses were sharper than they had ever been.
Every sound is cut clean. Every scent layered itself clearly in my mind.
And threaded through it all was him. Even when the Alpha wasn’t near, the bond hummed like a second heartbeat. Steady. Watchful. Possessive.I hated how comforted I felt by it.
My husband was recovering well. The healer assured me his wounds were minor , nothing more than exhaustion and strain.
He joked about it over breakfast, smiling easily as if war hadn’t brushed death so closely against him.
I laughed when I was supposed to. Listened when I should. Played the role of the relieved, dutiful wife.
But guilt traps me nevertheless . “You’re different,” he said suddenly, setting his cup down.
My heart stuttered.
“Different how?” I asked carefully.
He studied me, not suspicious, just thoughtful. That made it worse.
“You seems stronger,” he said. “More present.”
I forced a small smile. “Maybe I just missed you.”
He returned the smile, but something flickered in his eyes. Uncertainty.I looked away first.
The summons came before noon.An elder approached me quietly, her eyes sharp and judging .
“The council requests your presence,” she said. “Immediately.”
My stomach dropped.
I followed her through the stone corridors, every step heavy with dread.
The council chamber doors lay ahead, ancient and carved with stone older than the pack itself.
When they opened, the Alpha was already inside.Standing.Waiting.Our eyes met.The bond flared violently.I almost stumbled.
He didn’t move, but I felt his attention lock onto me completely, like a hand closing around my spine.
The elders spoke first.
“You shifted late,” Elder Mira said, her voice gentle but probing. “Very late.”
“Yes,” I answered.
“And your wolf,” another elder continued. “Describe her.”
The Alpha’s eyes sharpened. “She is strong,” I said . “Confused and she still has a lot to learn.”
Murmurs rippled through the chamber.
The Alpha stepped forward.
“That will be enough,” he said calmly.
The room fell silent instantly.
“She is newly awakened,” he continued. “Pushing her now would be reckless.”An elder studied him closely.
Too closely.
“As you say, Alpha,” she said at last. “But the pack feels her. Power does not stay hidden forever.”
I felt his tension spike.
“You are dismissed,” he said.
The elders bowed and filed out.
Leaving us alone.
The silence was unbearable.
“You shouldn’t have intervened,” I said softly.
His jaw tightened. “They were circling you.”
“I can handle questions.”
“No,” he said sharply, turning to face me fully. “You cannot. Not yet.”
The bond pulsed, heated and intense, and suddenly I was painfully aware of how close he stood. Too close.
Every breath felt shared.
“You’re being watched,” he continued. “By the elders. By the pack. And my brother.”
That last part made my chest ache.
“I don’t want to hurt him,” I whispered.
“I know.”
His voice was quieter now. Controlled but strained.
“That does not change what you are,” he added. “Or what you mean.”
My wolf pushed forward, yearning, desperate.
I hugged my arms around myself. “This is tearing me apart.”
His eyes softened for just a heartbeat. Then the Alpha mask snapped back into place.
“You will be moved,” he said.
“What?”
“To the inner wing,” he clarified. “For protection.”
Panic flared. “That’s too close to you . People will talk.”
“They already are,” he replied. “This way, I control the narrative.”
I stared at him. “You’re locking me closer to you.”
“Yes.”
The honesty of it stole my breath.
That night, sleep betrayed me.
I dreamed of heat and shadows. Of strong hands that never touched but hovered just close enough to burn. Of eyes glowing gold in the dark.
I woke up gasping for ai .The bond is more intense .
I knew before I heard the knock.
“Come in,” I whispered.
The door opened.
The Alpha stood there, rigid, breathing hard, as if he had fought himself the entire way.
“You felt that too,” I said.
“Yes.”
.“This bond is strengthening,” he said. “You’re dreaming of me.”
Heat flooded my face.
“So are you,” I accused.
Silence confirmed it.
He exhaled slowly. “This cannot continue this way .”
“What are you saying?”
He met my eyes, dark and unyielding.
“I am losing control,” he said. “And if I lose it publicly, the pack will learn the truth.”
Fear and longing twisted together painfully inside me.
“What do we do?” I asked.
For the first time since this began, he didn’t answer immediately.Instead, he said quietly, dangerously
