I stood by the kitchen counter, holding the pregnancy test with both hands, my heart thudding so loudly I could hear it in my ears. The word “positive” stared up at me like it had been waiting to change everything. I hadn’t meant to buy it today, I hadn’t even missed a full cycle yet. But something in me had known.
Then I heard the front door open.
Lucian’s voice floated in, casual and warm, “Hey, baby. You home early—?”
He paused. I could feel his gaze settle on me.
“Olivia? What’s wrong?”
I swallowed, unable to answer right away. My throat felt dry.
“I… I’m not sure how to say this.”
Lucian crossed the room fast. “You’re scaring me. Did something happen?”
“No, it’s…it’s not bad. I mean, I don’t think it’s bad. I just… I bought something today. Impulsively.”
