Chapter Fifteen Rachel My stomach started hurting again in the late afternoon. I had not eaten much since the small breakfast earlier, and the baby needed food. I could not hide in my room forever. Even though my heart was heavy from the time on the balcony, I forced myself to go downstairs to the kitchen. The hallways felt longer this time. I kept my head down and walked as quietly as possible. When I reached the kitchen door, I took a deep breath before pushing it open. The three maids were still working inside. The smell of warm soup and fresh bread filled the air. My mouth watered, but I stayed near the door, waiting. They saw me. I knew they did. But no one said anything. They continued cutting vegetables, stirring pots, and cleaning counters like I was not even standing there.
