The knock came earlier than usual. I was still sitting by the window, reading one of the books Elena had given me, when the door opened. The sun had only just set. Normally Kylian came deep into the night, when the mansion was completely quiet. Tonight, he arrived while the sky was still painted with the last traces of orange. My heart jumped as he stepped inside and closed the door behind him. He looked different tonight — more intense, more restless. His eyes found mine immediately and held them. He didn’t speak.
