Riley pulled out a chair at the opposite end of the table, keeping maximum distance. “I’m hungry. That’s all. Don’t read into it.”
Kai chuckled, low and warm. “Feisty. I like that. Makes winning the bet even sweeter.”
She shot him a flat look. “There is no bet. And even if there was, I’m not participating. I’m not some prize to be won.” She reached for the salad bowl and served herself a generous portion, keeping her movements brisk and businesslike. “I have a heavy course load this semester. I’ll be in the library most days and studying late. You probably won’t even notice I’m here.”
