Hailey’s face hardened, her eyes narrowing to dangerous slits. "What? How? When?"
"Just now. She came with flowers. Acting all concerned and sympathetic."
"What did she say?" Hailey asked, her voice tight.
"She said it was a tragic accident. She said it was a drunk driver. She said she was sorry."
Hailey's eyes widened. She didn't need to say anything. I knew she understood.
"It was her," I said, my voice breaking. "I know it was her, Hailey. The way she looked at me, the way she smiled. She was enjoying it. She was enjoying my pain."
Hailey didn't hesitate. She pulled me into a tight hug, her arms wrapping around me and Phoenix. "I know," she said, her voice a low, fierce whisper. "I believe you. We knew it from the start. And I'm so sorry you had to face her alone."
