She’d stop being ours. Trees blurred past as we entered the forest, leaping over roots and ducking under low branches. The moon was high and bright, but it barely touched the canopy. Shadows ruled here. ‘Kitten,’ I tried again, softer. ‘Please… let me in.’ But it was like screaming into a vacuum. The path narrowed, and then—suddenly—widened. She’d slammed through a clearing, the grass scorched black in her wake. I could still feel her presence here, electric and thick like fog. I skidded to a stop, breathing hard. She was close.
