Asher Ever since escorting Cynthia home the night before, she had stayed in my thoughts. Alone in the quiet of my room, I thought of little else but the feel of her warmth within the circle of my arms. I wanted to keep her safe more than anything. I had never thought Lamar worthy of her, but other than his questionable association with Joseph, he had seemed harmless enough. Now though, my protective instincts heightened, begging me to keep her away from him. Lamar had been careless with Cynthia. He had not walked her home, despite the lateness of the hour. That had been bad enough on its own. But my dislike of him struck deeper within me. He’d made it personal against me when he lied to Cynthia about me having attacked him. I hadn’t gone near him, trying to respect Cynthia’s wishes.
