Renee It felt weird, having all of these people gathered around Olivia’s hospital bed, just standing there, with their hands clasped in front of their bodies like they were already standing in front of a coffin. We had spent a long, anxious night watching the monitors while the doctor and nurses came and went. I stood next to my father on one side, while Josiah stood with his beta, Elton on the other. Dr. Ramirez stood at the foot of the bed clutching a clipboard in front of her chest like a shield. “Olivia has developed pneumonia,” she informed us quietly, “and multiple organ failure.” She went on to give a more in-depth explanation using a lot of medical terminology that I wasn’t familiar with. But I got the jist of it. We were losing her. It felt wrong to be having this conversation
