Stephen I should have known Laura wasn’t joking. The problem was, my wife joked about almost everything. She could threaten to divorce me over the temperature of the thermostat and then climb into bed five minutes later with her freezing feet pressed against my legs. So when she’d casually announced over dinner that our family needed “balance” and suggested adding a daughter, I’d assumed she was mostly trying to watch me choke on my food. Then she’d said not yet.
