Stephen The door to my office slammed open hard enough to make the glass walls vibrate. I didn’t even bother looking up from the contract in front of me. “Good morning, Mother.” “I sincerely doubt there’s anything good about this morning.” I finished signing the last page, set my pen neatly on the desk, and finally looked up. Evelyn was standing in the middle of my office with her purse clutched under one arm, her expression somewhere between disbelief and outrage. I sighed. “What have I done now?” She crossed her arms. “I’ve just come from a board luncheon.” “My condolences.” Her eyes narrowed. “You’ve inherited your father’s sarcasm.” “No.” I smiled faintly. “I think Laura deserves most of the credit for that.” The mention of my wife only seemed to irritate her further.
