I turned to Daisy, holding her small hands in mine, her palms soft and warm against my skin. “Let’s get you something to eat first,” I told her gently. “When we leave the hospital, we’ll explain everything to you.” She blinked up at me, then her eyes darted to Benjamin, searching his face. Then she looked back at me. “Okay, mummy.” My lips curved in a smile I wasn’t sure she bought, and I smoothed a strand of hair from her forehead. “Great.” Then I looked over at Benjamin and gave him a small nod, one only he and I understood.
