The next evening after my shift, the diner smelled like old grease and burnt coffee, the way it always did at closing time. I was wiping down the last table when Sofia poked her head out from the back. “You good to lock up? I’ve got a hot date today, don't wait up for me, i will be back late.” I gave her a tired smile. “Go. I’ll finish up.” She blew me a kiss and disappeared out the back door.
