Chapter 48: Testing the Waters

1109 Words

The next few days after I came back felt like testing the waters with someone you already knew could drown you. I went back to class on Monday, walked through the gates with my backpack and the gold “D” necklace hidden under my hoodie. The marks from our reunion night were still faintly visible on my neck and thighs, but I didn’t bother covering them all. Let people look and let them wonder. Damien picked me up after my last lecture. He was waiting by the curb in his black SUV, no driver this time, just him. He didn’t hover or insist on walking me to every class. He simply opened the door, kissed my forehead, and asked how my day went. It was… nice, almost normal. “How was the lecture?” he asked as we pulled away from campus. “Boring as hell,” I said, leaning my head against the seat.
