The house was silent except for the ticking of the wall clock. I hadn’t realized how late it had gotten until the numbers on my phone changed to 1:17 AM. My eyes burned from crying, but sleep refused to come. The couch felt uncomfortable now, but I didn’t move. Going upstairs meant facing Damien again and right now I didn’t know if I had the strength for another conversation that might end the same way the others had tonight.
