The day Sofia was supposed to come felt both too slow and too fast at the same time. I had barely slept the night before. Damien held me close like always, his arm around my waist, but my mind kept racing. What if Sofia looked at me differently now? What if she was angry that I had told her to stop searching? What if seeing her made everything hurt worse? Damien had been quieter than usual that morning. He made breakfast again and we ate together at the table. He didn’t push for conversation. He just watched me with that careful look in his eyes. “You nervous?” he asked finally, voice gentle. I nodded, pushing my eggs around the plate. “Yeah. Really nervous.
