Evelyn It’s as if I can feel Alexander pounding on the edges of our connection, trying to get to me through it. I don’t know what exactly he’s responding to because I’m so focused on the threats in front of me—and now the one behind me. I turn quickly around to find Minister Coltain towering over me. He looks from me to Lucas, and part of me wishes I hadn’t lodged my only weapon in Lucas’ shoulder. “Is he dead?” the minister asks. “Just unconscious.” I don’t like that I’m stuck on the ground with my casted leg. I don’t like the gleam in Minister Coltain’s eye. “Pity,” he says. Then, as if forgetting Lucas entirely, he focuses on me. “Let’s go.” “What?” I motion to my casted leg with my casted arm.
