We drove and drove.
We didn’t stop at Jeanie’s little apartment over the garage, or at the old house where Gabe lived with a lot of other men. We didn’t even go to the big Segretto Mansion where Lucy lived. We drove past Rutberg and through Townline, into the countryside, to a place I’d never been before. All around were fields and farms and big old houses.
We turned down a bumpy dirt road and followed it all the way to the end.
At the end of the road was an old house. It wasn’t pretty or fancy, but I felt a funny excitement in my tummy; the kind of feeling you get when you are in an elevator and it starts to go down suddenly. “Is that it?” I strained against the seatbelt. “Is that our new house?”
“Yep,” Gabe said with a big smile. “That’s our new house. What do you think?”
