MAZE’S POV Coming home should have felt better than it did. Everyone celebrated and everyone smiled. Everyone acted like the nightmare was over. The problem was that part of me never really came home. Part of me was still trapped inside that room. Still counting guard rotations, still listening for footsteps and still waiting for someone to open the door. The first night back at the clubhouse I woke up three different times reached for a weapon. The second night wasn’t much better. And by the third night I stopped pretending. I slept with a knife under my pillow and Knox discovered it immediately. Of course he did. That man noticed everything. I woke up one morning to find him holding the blade while staring at me and I stretched tiredly. “You planning to stab me with that?”
