EVANGELINE I woke up to a pounding in my skull and an incessant beeping that I just couldn’t get to stop. It wasn’t until I managed to open my eyes that I realized the beeping wasn’t coming from me, it was coming from the machine right next to me. Someone had hooked me up to an IV and a monitor for my heart. “What the f**k?” I groaned out, trying to pull myself to a sitting position, but I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. “Don’t,” a nurse said, her voice soft. “You need to rest.” Her eyes were warm as she gently helped me back into a lying position. I reached up to touch my hair but my fingers met smooth material. It was only then I remembered what happened. I remembered Margaret coming on, her words, how desperately she’d tried to upset me. I remembered ignoring her and walking away
