Rage flooded my bones. “No!”
She stood there, mouth agape in shock. I’d never refused her once in my entire three years of being married to her son. I did everything I could to be the dutiful wife, and the obedient daughter-in-law. I took her insults in stride and smiled when I needed to, but I was done.
“Did you just-”
“Yes, I refused,” I cut her off. “I haven’t forgotten all the s**t you did to me. The way you insulted me, the way you threatened my friend. I’m not going to be your pawn anymore.”
“How are you speak to me like that?” she asked, voice rising. “Have you forgotten who I am? I will-”
“Mother!” Alex snapped.
He stormed over to his, eyes hooded with rage and hands fisted by his side. I waited for the inevitable berating I would get from him, but it never came.
