I stayed silent as the children filled the space with chatter. Myra shared her drawings, the twins argued over whose wolf looked scarier, and Adeline intervened when she could. She served Myra first. “Careful, it’s hot.” “Okay,” Myra said, blowing on her spoon. “It smells good.” “Because my mom made it,” Elijah said proudly, as if he’d contributed something. “Then she’s the best cook!” Myra decided, grinning. Adeline’s eyes softened. “Flattery will get you extra bread.” The twins cheered. Myra giggled. I didn’t realize how long I’d been watching until Adam whispered again. ‘You could get used to this.’ I tightened my grip on the edge of the table. “Stop.” He ignored me. She looks at them like she used to look at you. Like they’re pieces of her peace. It hurt because it was true.
