When I woke up the following morning I got out of bed immediately and I didn’t try to convince myself that last night didn’t happen. I knew that it wasn’t a dream and I had learned a long time ago to trust that feeling when I knew something was off. I pulled on a loose shirt and shorts and I moved quietly through the apartment as I brushed my teeth and tied my hair back. I went back to the bedroom and I grabbed the knife that was still under my pillow and I walked to the front door. I opened it slowly and stepped outside but there was nothing. No one was out there now. I stood there for a moment and scanned the yard that was in complete disarray again with empty alcohol bottles and I looked along the treeline.
