The drive back to Ohio felt longer than the journey to Alaska although the distance hadn’t changed. Everything else had.
When we left Ohio we believed we were following the final trail left behind by the Architect. We expected to uncover forgotten evidence, recover missing memories and finally close the investigation that had consumed so much of our lives.
Instead we had discovered something far more dangerous. The Architect had never built the Asset program. He had inherited it. Atlas had built the machine.
Those words replayed endlessly inside my mind while the highway stretched ahead beneath gray winter skies.
