The property felt quieter after midnight and the silence crawled under my skin worse than shouting ever had because every time things got too still my head started replaying memories I didn’t want to hear again. ‘You’re wasted with him.’ I sat on the hood of one of the old trucks near the edge of the yard while a cigarette burned slowly between my fingers. The cold air pressed against my skin hard enough to sting the bruises still fading across my ribs. The words would not leave me alone. Not because I beleive Raze and not because I thought he was right about Drake. But because he had looked at me like he understood something before I did. That part bothered me.
