“I’m coming, too.” Laura said, tone full of defiance. “No,” Talon replied firmly. “Church is no place for an ol’ lady. Let alone mine.” I nodded in agreement, even though the tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. “Talon’s right. This isn’t your fight, Laura. We’ll handle it.” She looked between us, worried. “I’m part of this now. I’m part of the club. I want to help.” Talon stepped toward her, his voice softening despite the edge in it. “You help by staying out of it. Being safe. That’s what I need from you.” Her lips pressed into a thin line, but she didn’t protest any further.
