I was already past listening. I sat on the edge of the bed and slid my arms underneath her, pulled her up against my chest, and pressed my mouth to the top of her head. She was shaking. She was burning hot and shaking and I held her and said into her hair, "I'm sorry, sunshine. I'm here, I've got you, I'm going to fix this."
I stood up with her and turned toward the door and Rika moved and put himself directly in my path. He wasn't aggressive about it, he just stood there, solid and calm and completely unmovable, and looked at me with an expression that was not apologetic and not backing down.
