SLOANE Athena stood there at the end of the hallway staring at us like she'd been caught doing something she shouldn't. Her chest rose with heavy breaths. That perfect composure she always wore had cracked just enough to show something underneath. Something I didn't trust. "Where did he rush out from?" Her voice came out sharp like she had the right to interrogate me about my own son. I didn't answer her. Couldn't answer her without my suspicions spilling out in accusations I wasn't ready to voice yet. It was weird as hell that I'd asked her minutes ago if she'd seen Cade. She'd looked me straight in the eye, said no with that calm smooth tone, and suggested I check outside with the pack members. She'd lied. "Thank you for finding them, Athena." The words tasted like ash in my mouth.
