Gideon’s POV The darkness was my enemy. I couldn’t remember why I was fighting, only that it was essential that I wake up. I punched upwards through the shadows. My limbs felt heavy and unresponsive, and I knew I still dreamed because the darkness was made of hands that clutched at me and tried to drag me back down into oblivion. There was one gleam of gold in the darkness, a radiant thread that seemed perpetually at the corner of my eyes. It moved when I tried to look at it directly, but its gleaming light was present nonetheless. When the anguish swamped over me, the golden thread pulled me forward, up and out. Avery. Her face swam before my eyes. I couldn’t remember anything, but Avery needed me. I could feel it. She was hurting. I needed to go to her. I needed to save her. M
