Syria’s POV “Kael…?” I slowly opened my eyes. They squinting at the faint glow inside the cave. I expected to feel Kael right beside me, breathing softly the way he usually did when asleep. But when I turned, there was nothing. The space next to me was empty. “Kael?” My voice cracked as I called out, louder the second time. “Kael, where are you?” A sharp rush of panic jolted me fully awake. My chest tightened and I pushed myself up too quickly, ignoring the stabbing pain that shot through my body. I scanned the cave. Darkness spread around the area and the silence was unbearable. He was gone. “No, no, no…” I whispered, shaking my hands as I forced myself up. I’d fallen asleep. How could I have? I was supposed to watch him! I’d been awake all night, exhausted, and barely hold
