Debbie. I snatched the plastic sticks from River’s hand. My heart was thumping so hard I could feel it in my throat. I looked down at them. My vision blurred for a second, then everything became sharp. Two lines. Dark, bold, and undeniable. They stared back at me like two judge’s gavels hitting a desk. "No," I whispered. My voice sounded thin and far away. "How? How can this be happening?" “I'm… I'm pregnant?” I felt the blood drain from my face. My legs felt like they were made of water. I collapsed back onto the mattress, the bed creaking under my weight. My mind was a mess of dates and memories. I thought about the implant. I thought about how I hadn't checked it. I thought about the distance between me and Black. We hadn't been close for a long time. This wasn't supposed to happen.
