Jake said he was going into town like it was a big announcement. He’d gotten a text from a guy at the rental place about a pickup basketball game at the marina and burgers after. He was pacing while talking about it, juggling his phone, sunglasses, and a half-closed water bottle.
“Come with me,” he said, kissing my cheek and leaving sunscreen on my hairline.
“I’m staying,” I told him. “Headache. And I want to read without falling asleep after three pages.”
“You sure?” He squinted at me. “Might rain later.”
“It won’t,” Daniel said from the doorway. He was in a plain t-shirt and the shorts he seemed to wear every day.
