“Vanilla… meet me in my office.” The words cut through the lecture hall like a whip as students started gathering their things. Vanilla froze in her seat, a hot flush creeping up her neck and face. She absolutely hated that name. Her mother had given it to her twenty-one years ago, thinking it was cute and sweet. All it had ever brought her was endless mockery, weird looks, and now, as a university student — constant teasing from classmates who thought it was hilarious. She turned to her best friend, Kimberly, who was slouched beside her with her backpack already half-packed. “Kim, please… Come with me. I can’t face him alone. He’s going to tear me apart for failing this course.” Vanilla knew she didn't do well in the course and she hated that she had to beg her arrogant step father.
