The girl looked fragile, her bare feet dusty, her hair tangled in ribbons, and her wide eyes still darting around as if expecting someone to appear from the shadows. I didn’t trust the quiet anymore. Not after what had just happened in the garden.
“Take her inside,” I said to the guards. “No handcuffs. She’s just a child.”
