She was jealous tonight.
The memory sends warmth through my chest despite the current tension. The way her eyes had darkened when she thought Katie was my girlfriend, the barely concealed relief when I'd corrected her assumption—it means she feels something. Something real, beyond gratitude or the need for validation she'd confessed to this morning.
But that also makes her more vulnerable. More at risk of being hurt again if I push too hard, too fast.
"Lynn," I start, then stop, unsure how to phrase what I want to say without making it sound like exactly what I'm afraid it will sound like.
She turns back, one hand on her doorframe, exhaustion evident in every line of her body. "Yeah?"
