The last two rooms were quiet. Four women, all sleeping, tucked under clean blankets with their hair washed and their wrists free and no tubes anywhere near them. One of them had her hand resting on her stomach. Another had turned toward the window, face soft in sleep, like the setting sun had done what all our reassurances could not.
I stood there longer than necessary.

Eventually he said, “It is close to sunset. They had a rough night, and Kat ran analysis on all of them today. They need sleep more than another Alpha hovering in the doorway.”
