“Stay.”
Her movement stops.
“Edward—”
“Just stay like this for a minute.” My voice comes out quieter than I intend. “You've been angry since we left.”
A shaky laugh escapes her. “Only since we left?”
“Fair point.” I rest my chin lightly again on top of her head. “Colt isn't touching you.”
I feel her fingers tighten around the back of my shirt.
For a few seconds, neither of us says anything. Then, she tilts her head back to look at me and her expression has hardened.
“I don't need you to protect me from Colt anymore.”
My brow lifts. “No?”
“I mean it.” She steps back slightly, out of my arms, and I let her go. “If the council is going to let him walk around with five thousand dollars and a pat on the back, then I’ll handle it myself.”
“And how exactly are you planning to do that?
