I choke out a sound, cursing Paige with everything I have, but it comes out weak and garbled. If the water were clear, my blood would be dark and visible. Pain claws at my lower belly and I want to scream until my throat breaks.
I force the scream down, because crying out here would drown me for sure. Instead I bite my lip, throat burning, and fight to keep my head above water.
I’m getting weaker with every stroke. The current yanks me one way, then another, and I slam into rock after rock and each time I let out a scream, I gush in more water, at this point, I’m likely to drown sooner.
Each hit steals a little more strength. My limbs burn. My breath comes in ragged pulls. I can’t keep this up much longer.
