My bare feet pounded on the wet muddy ground, my heart matched the sound of the steps, and the smell of rain permeated the air.
The moon was full and bright, illuminating the forest as it was the only source of light.
My breathing was harsh and ragged, sweat dripping down my forehead, and fear gripping my heart.

It echoed through the trees, the voice familiar and filled with terror. It sliced through the silence like a blade.

No hesitation. My legs moved on instinct, tearing through low branches, sharp leaves scratching against my skin.
“Kai!” I screamed, voice breaking.
It didn’t make sense. He was safe at home. I’d tucked him in myself, kissed his forehead, whispered that monsters weren’t real.
