The first thing I did when I got back to my apartment was take a shower and change into dry clothes. Now that I had permission to investigate Ashley's disappearance on my own, the last thing I needed was to catch some kind of illness.
I grabbed my car keys and decided to begin my thorough search at the Donovans' house.
When I arrived, the first thing I noticed was that no one was home—as usual—which meant I would have to find some way around the security system.

I didn't have time for any of it.
Throwing caution to the wind, I kicked the front door open.
The alarm immediately went off, filling the house with its deafening noise. I ignored it, hurried upstairs, and stopped when I reached Ashley's bedroom.
