The journey back to the Blackwood Pack house was silent and tense.
The moment they reached the courtyard entrance, Margaret whirled around and kicked Miranda's legs out from under her. The younger woman crashed to her knees with a sickening thud.
Miranda's knees hit the exact patch of stone path where Viya had knelt for so many years.
The impact was brutal. Her face contorted in agony as pain shot through her legs.
Before she could even process what had happened, Margaret's hand cracked across her face in a vicious slap.
One wasn't enough.
Margaret struck her again and again, alternating between cheeks until both sides of Miranda's face were swollen and red. Even then, she didn't stop, her voice rising to a furious shriek.
