Her hand crushed mine, but I barely felt it. My heart was hammering so loudly I could hear it in my ears. Sweat plastered her hair to her forehead; her face twisted in pain, in power, in sheer, unstoppable will.
I could only whisper to her—how strong she was, how proud I was, how much I loved her—because if I spoke any louder, the emotion would’ve cracked me clean open.
“Push, Angelica. You’re almost there,” the doctor said, her voice steady over the chaos.
