His voice cracked just slightly on that last part, and that was it.
The dam broke.
Tears hit before I could stop them, hot and uninvited.
He wiped the first one with his thumb, pulled me into his arms like he could shield me from myself.
“Don’t cry, love,” he whispered against my temple. “Please. Don’t shut me out. Don’t carry it alone. Just talk to me. Tell me what’s eating you up.”
His heart was pounding. I could feel it through his chest. I think mine stopped.
This was it.
No more hiding. No more waiting for a better time. No more pretending.
I stepped back, just enough to meet his eyes.
